Preparing the wool for spinning

After shearing, the fleece is sorted by type and color. The wool is then teased to loosen and straighten the fibers before it’s spun into yarn.
Spinning the Yarn

The wool is spun into yarn using either a hand spindle or a wheel spindle—a skill passed down from mother to daughter. Once spun, the yarn is wound into skeins and prepared for dyeing.

Dyeing the Wool

The dye pot sits on a simple handmade brick stove. The dye water is heated over a wood fire. The men do the dying with mostly natural dyes from plants collected in the local area.

After dyeing, the yarn is washed and hung out to dry in the sun.
